JFK: The Dallas Mayor’s Committee on the JFK 50th Anniversary
The Growing Challenge with Disability BenefitsThe Growing Challenge with Disability Benefits

Fifty years ago, President John F. Kennedy’s assassination changed the world.

President Kennedy’s death would become a weight that Dallas citizens, including those born after November 22, 1963, would carry in their hearts for years to come. Did Dallas deserve the label that so many around the country and even the world gave to it: “The City of Hate”?

To honor the memory of President Kennedy’s life and legacy, Dallas will host The 50th: Honoring the Memory of President John F. Kennedy event.  Joining us to talk about the 50th commemoration of President John F. Kennedy’s life and legacy are:

  • Mayor Michael S. Rawlings – Honorary Chair of the Committee, and
  • Ruth Sharp Altshuler – a civic leader and philanthropist and Chair of the President John F. Kennedy Commemorative Foundation.

Mayor Mike (Michael S.) Rawlings received a call a couple of years ago from an LA Times reporter who asked, “What are you planning for the 50th?” Well, it had not yet been thought of… “You don’t understand,” he said, “this is going to be followed around the world. Dallas will be front and center.”  Mayor Rawlings adds, “I realized this might be one of the most important things I accomplish as mayor”.

North Texans greet President John F. Kennedy and Mrs. Kennedy at Love Field on Nov. 22, 1963.

He invited Ruth Altshuler to join him in making the event a success, “If you really love Dallas, do this for Dallas.”  Ruth could not resist such an invitation and took the helm in bringing an extraordinary celebration to fruition. “It’s important that the city of Dallas has a strong voice in remembering this very solemn day,” said Altshuler. “The donors have done a wonderful job in creating an event which will live up to the sense of history and dignity it deserves,” she added.

The 50th: Honoring the Memory of President John F. Kennedy event, funded by private donations, will be Dallas’ chance to do a “tip of the hat” and offer condolences to President Kennedy’s family. It will be a serious, understated and respectful commemoration in tribute to our nation’s 35th president.  Ms. Altshuler has called on her friend, Pulitzer prize winner and historian, David McCullough, as the main speaker.

The private/public partnership is led by Dallas Mayor Michael S. Rawlings and a broad cross section of 25 local civic leaders in cooperation with the city of Dallas. For additional information, please visit:  www.50thHonoringJohnFKennedy.com.
